From a family business to a forward-thinking brand
Peters’ Cleaners was established in Peterborough in February 1963 by Peter Grist and his sons, Peter and Paul. With its pioneering “on-the-spot” cleaning service, the business quickly earned a reputation for exceptional quality and customer care.
For decades, the family team and later, their dedicated staff, looked after the people of Peterborough and Stamford, becoming part of the local fabric. But as the world changed, so did people’s routines. Fewer high-street trips, longer commutes and busier lives began to make traditional dry cleaning less convenient.
A turning point
By 2016, Peters’ Cleaners had loyal clients, skilled staff and a fantastic reputation but revenue was under pressure. Costs were rising and consumer behaviour was shifting. The business needed a fresh approach.
Enter Vicky Whiter. Having spent eight years commuting to London, Vicky knew first-hand how inconvenient it could be to reach a dry cleaner during limited opening hours. She believed there had to be a better way- one that kept the same high quality, but worked for how people actually live today.
In June 2016, she stepped in to save the business from closure and set out on a mission:
To make exceptional dry cleaning as easy and convenient as ordering a takeaway without ever compromising on quality.
The first wave of innovation
After two years of development, 2019 saw the launch of the UK’s first fully automated 24/7 dry-cleaning pod at Peterborough Station. Designed for commuters, the pod allowed customers to drop off and collect whenever it suited them.
The idea was strong, but timing wasn’t. When lockdown hit in early 2020, commuter numbers disappeared overnight. Rather than give up, Vicky and the team adapted moving the pod to Serpentine Green shopping centre and developing a new online ordering system. Customers could now book dry cleaning directly through the website, simplifying the process further.
Those years of challenge led to something powerful: a business that truly understood modern convenience, built on a foundation of heritage, skill, and customer trust.
Enter: InPost
